Yeast Infection, Sex and How to Handle the Situation

Being that yeast infections are very uncomfortable and can be quite an upset in our lives, we should explore some situations that can be troublesome when you are experiencing symptoms related to a yeast infection, such as sex.  With a yeast infection, sex can be an additional issue that can cause some serious questions to arise and often people find themselves wondering if they should stop sex all together or if there is a way to make the situation less uncomfortable for everyone involved.

Let us clear the air first.  You should not mistake a yeast infection for a sexually transmitted disease.  These are two very separate things.  If you are concerned that you may possibly be experiencing a sexually transmitted disease you should see the advice of a doctor as soon as possible.  Unfortunately it is hard to distinguish the difference in the two conditions because many of the symptoms are quite similar, so please see medical advice if you are not sure.

Given that advice, you should also know that it is entirely possible to transmit a yeast infection to your partner.  And both of you should be aware of that before you have sex with a yeast infection.  And it can be transferred to your partner from both intercourse as well as oral sex.

Clearly you have taken the initiative to find out the best advice as far as a yeast infection, sex and oral sex go and your concern in the right place.  When it comes to sex with a yeast infection it is generally a good idea to “just say no”.  Depending on your symptoms you may be in some serious discomfort during sex.  Pain and irritation are very common during sex because your vagina is already probably swollen and sore to begin with that any other disturbance could certainly make the condition worse.  Not to mention the fact that your partner can get it and you both can pass it back and forth, making it considerably harder to control and cure.

But let’s be realistic, some of us have experienced a yeast infection for a long, long time, some people do not even realize they have one.  So when it comes to a yeast infection, sex can not always be ruled out.  So it goes without saying that many of you have either tried it, or are going to try it no matter what you read online here.

Ok, knowing that you shouldn’t have sex with a yeast infection but are choosing to anyways it’s important that you take as many steps as possible to avoid any addition concerns that may come with it.

  • First and foremost, start a treatment program ASAP!
  • Be open to your partner about the condition, make sure you partner understand the infection and the risk that is being taken, so there is no misunderstanding later down the road.  Let your partner know what you are experiencing and the symptoms you have.
  • Clean all areas well.  Clean and dry the area as best you can before intercourse
  • Understand that condoms and diaphragms will be less effective when the uses of suppositories or creams are used in the yeast infection treatment.
  • Immediately after urinate and clean the area well again (both of you!)

Again, I must state that when experiencing a yeast infection, sex is never a good idea!  And that treatment should be started immediately to avoid potential health issues.  For more information on yeast infection treatments Click Here
